Viking is inviting experienced ocean-going officers to make the transition to river cruise operations through its recertification program.

The recruitment initiative is open to second officers and captains with ocean-vessel experience who are interested in working aboard Viking’s river ships.

Successful candidates can pursue opportunities on European waterways including the Rhine and Danube, as well as rivers in France.

Although ocean and river navigation share many professional foundations, operating a river vessel requires a specialized set of skills and qualifications.

River captains and officers must navigate narrow waterways, changing water levels, locks and bridges. They also perform frequent docking operations and sail through densely populated areas where traffic can be heavy and available maneuvering space limited.

Viking’s recertification program is designed to help qualified ocean officers adapt their existing maritime experience to the requirements of inland navigation.

The program could provide a new career option for officers who want to remain in the maritime industry while moving into a different working environment.

River cruising has several operational differences from ocean cruising. Voyages are generally closer to land, itineraries involve frequent port calls and vessels are significantly smaller. Officers may also work more closely with local port authorities and waterway control centers.
