Every seafarer has a story. Some experiences are rewarding, others challenging, and many fall somewhere in between. Now, maritime professionals from around the world have an opportunity to help shape future research by taking part in the SIROS – Survey of Incidents and Responses Onboard.

The anonymous research project is open to anyone who has spent time on board any type of vessel or offshore platform. This includes cruise ship crew, merchant mariners, fishing vessel crews, offshore workers, researchers, contractors, law enforcement personnel, cadets, visitors, and even passengers.

Unlike many surveys that focus only on accidents or major incidents, SIROS is interested in all onboard experiences—positive, neutral, and negative. By collecting a broad range of perspectives, researchers hope to build one of the most comprehensive datasets on life at sea across different sectors of the maritime industry.

Why your participation matters

There is currently very little global research that compares onboard experiences across different types of ships and offshore workplaces. Every response helps create a more accurate picture of the realities of working and living at sea.

The findings could help researchers, educators, industry leaders, and policymakers better understand the challenges and strengths of onboard life, potentially contributing to future improvements in areas such as crew welfare, safety, workplace culture, communication, and operational practices.
