A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a passenger standing on the exterior of the Norwegian Getaway to take a selfie while the cruise ship is docked.

The footage shows the passenger far outside the guest area, standing alone on a narrow section of the ship’s exterior near the bow. There is no safety barrier protecting from a potentially fatal fall onto the pier or into the water below.

After taking the selfie, the passenger is seen returning to his cabin by climbing over the balcony railing. The dangerous move required him to jump across the railing from the ship’s exterior.

It remains unclear when the video was recorded.

Cruise lines have strict safety rules prohibiting passengers from climbing over balcony railings or entering restricted parts of a ship. Similar incidents have previously resulted in fatal endings. 

No selfie or social-media video is worth risking a life.
