Scottish ultra-runner Paul Manson completed seven marathons in seven days during a Mediterranean cruise aboard the cruise ship Enchanted Princess.
Known on social media as The Random Runner, Manson called the challenge “Run the Med.” His goal was to cover 42.195 kilometers each day while still following the ship’s itinerary.
The challenge began in Rome, where he ran past landmarks including the Colosseum. He continued in Naples despite temperatures reaching around 38°C before completing further runs in Montenegro and Greece.
One of his Greek routes passed through Olympia, the historic birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games.
A day at sea presented a different challenge. Unable to run ashore, Manson completed 185 laps of the running track aboard Enchanted Princess to reach the marathon distance.
His final run took place in Sicily while Mount Etna was erupting. Manson said he finished the marathon covered in volcanic ash before celebrating with a swim in the sea.
Completing seven marathons required him to manage heat, hydration, recovery and the limited time available during port calls. He also had to plan each route around the ship’s arrival and departure schedule.
Manson regularly shares running adventures under the name The Random Runner. His Mediterranean challenge later attracted the attention of ABC’s Good Morning America.
By the end of the cruise, he had completed almost 300 kilometers across Italy, Montenegro, Greece and the deck of Enchanted Princess, turning a seven-day holiday into an unusual endurance challenge.
