Indonesian crew members aboard Costa Serena celebrated their country’s Independence Day by sharing traditional music, dancing and food with colleagues from across the ship.

The event gave Indonesian employees an opportunity to bring a small piece of home aboard while inviting colleagues of other nationalities to join the celebration.

Indonesia celebrates its independence on August 17, marking the country’s declaration of independence in 1945. For Indonesian seafarers working thousands of miles from their families, the national holiday carries special meaning.

Life aboard a cruise ship brings together crew members from dozens of countries, each with their own languages, traditions and important national celebrations. Events such as the one aboard Costa Serena give employees an opportunity to learn about each other while creating a stronger sense of community.

Costa said celebrating the cultures represented among its crew is one of the ways the company promotes inclusion and belonging onboard.
