A 34-year-old man from Taranto was arrested at the Port of Naples just moments before he was due to board a Mediterranean cruise with his family, after Italian police executed a pre-trial detention order linked to an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.
According to Italian authorities, the suspect, identified as Vito Rizzo, was intercepted by officers from the Taranto Flying Squad at the cruise terminal before he could embark. The man was preparing to leave on vacation with his family when the arrest warrant was carried out.
The detention order was issued following an investigation into suspected drug dealing activities in the city's Salinella neighborhood.
The case stems from a police operation conducted on May 19, when officers searched an apartment allegedly connected to the investigation. During the raid, police reportedly caught a 19-year-old man allegedly selling narcotics and seized 65 doses of cocaine, a quantity of hashish, and more than €700 in cash believed to be proceeds from drug sales.
Investigators also recovered a shoulder bag containing handwritten notes that authorities believe documented work schedules for suspected drug dealers, along with what they described as accounting records related to the alleged trafficking operation.
Rizzo was not present during the May search but later appeared before the investigating judge for a preliminary hearing, a procedural step required under Italian law before certain precautionary detention measures are approved.
Authorities said the arrest was carried out at the Naples cruise terminal before the cruise ship departure, preventing the suspect from boarding. Italian investigators have not disclosed the name of the cruise ship or its planned itinerary.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Rizzo have yet to be tested in court. Under Italian law, he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty through the judicial process.
