Explora Journeys has officially entered the river cruise market. The MSC Group’s luxury ocean brand confirmed today that it has signed a letter of intent with Dutch shipbuilder Den Breejen Shipyard for the construction of its first luxury river ships.
The agreement marks a clear strategic expansion beyond ocean voyages, with the brand planning to apply its signature “Ocean State of Mind” philosophy — blending freedom of travel with refined European hospitality and design — to Europe’s most iconic inland waterways. Sales for the new river itineraries are scheduled to open in 2027, though specific details on ship design, onboard experiences, delivery schedules, and initial routes will be released later.
While Explora has not disclosed the number of vessels covered by the letter of intent or their capacity, the partnership signals an intention to deliver a high-end product consistent with the brand’s ocean standards.
This development comes as Explora Journeys continues to grow its ocean fleet. EXPLORA III, the line’s most spacious vessel and its first LNG-capable ship, recently joined the fleet, with EXPLORA IV expected in early 2027 and further ships following through 2028.
Den Breejen Shipyard, based in Hardinxveld-Giessendam in the Netherlands, brings specialized expertise in inland and river vessels. The yard has previously delivered ships for operators including Emerald Cruises (such as the 135-metre Emerald Luna, which sails the Rhine, Main, and Danube) and has recent work for other luxury and premium river brands.
The move places Explora Journeys among a growing number of ocean-focused companies expanding into Europe’s competitive river sector. Celebrity Cruises is preparing to launch its own river brand in 2027 with next-generation ships, while established players such as Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Scenic, and Avalon continue to dominate the market. Explora’s entry is expected to emphasize boutique-style experiences that allow guests to explore historic cities and cultural heartlands from the water, offering a different perspective from coastal port calls.
Further announcements on the river program are expected in the coming months as the letter of intent progresses toward firm contracts and more detailed plans.
