Greek authorities have arrested a cruise ship captain (Italian national) after a passenger fell into the water during a mooring incident at the port of Kerkyra on the Corfu Island. While officials did not identify the cruise ship by name, they confirmed it was sailing under the Bahamas flag.

According to local media reports and the Greek Coast Guard, the incident happened late Tuesday as strong winds battered the cruise port in Corfu, causing the ship's mooring lines to snap while the vessel was docked.

As the ship shifted away from the quay, the gangway reportedly moved out of position. A 56-year-old female passenger from New Zealand, who was crossing the gangway at the time, lost her footing and fell into the water.

Crew members and port personnel quickly launched a rescue operation and pulled the woman from the water. She was treated at the scene before being transported by ambulance to Corfu General Hospital with minor injuries to her face and body.

Authorities arrested the ship's 56-year-old Italian captain on allegations of endangering passengers. The investigation is focusing on the circumstances surrounding the mooring failure and whether all necessary safety measures had been taken despite the adverse weather conditions.

Despite the incident the cruise ship continued its scheduled voyage.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Norwegian Cruise Line has issued a statement denying reports that the captain of one of its cruise ships was arrested following an incident in Corfu, Greece, earlier this week.

“We’ve been made aware of several reports regarding an incident that occurred with one of our vessels earlier this week. Due to strong winds, one of our ships separated from the pier while docked in Corfu, Greece. As part of the standard local investigative process following incidents of this nature, the captain provided a statement to the local authorities. He fully cooperated with the investigation, was released without restriction following his statement and immediately resumed his duties aboard the vessel to prepare for the ship’s departure. The safety of our guests and crew remains our top priority, and the ship continued its voyage as planned with only minor adjustments to call times,” spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line said.
