A crew member was found dead aboard the cruise ship Celebrity Constellation after the vessel arrived in the Italian port of La Spezia on the morning of July 19, prompting an investigation by Italian authorities.
According to Italian newspaper Il Secolo XIX, the deceased was a 33-year-old stewardess from Mauritius who was discovered in her cabin by her partner, who also worked on board. The alarm was immediately raised, and the ship's medical team responded, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Il Secolo XIX reported that investigators are treating the death as a suspected suicide, although the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed.
After the ship completed docking operations, officers from the La Spezia police, forensic investigators, and the local prosecutor boarded the vessel to examine the scene. Prosecutor Giacomo Gustavino reportedly interviewed the woman's partner as part of the investigation. According to the newspaper, investigators are reviewing details surrounding the timeline of events, including information from the ship's security camera system. Authorities have also indicated that an autopsy may be ordered as the investigation continues.
The woman's body was transferred to the morgue at Sant'Andrea Hospital in La Spezia, where it remains available to judicial authorities. Italian officials are also coordinating with the Mauritian consulate to notify and assist the victim's family.
Following reports of the incident, Crew Center received a message from individuals identifying themselves as members of the crew member's family. In their message, they expressed concerns about the handling of the case, alleging there has been a lack of transparency and accountability from both the cruise line and the hiring agency. The family also stated that they believe there are unanswered questions surrounding the investigation and said they intend to seek legal representation through an international law firm.
The Celebrity Constellation was sailing a 10-day cruise from Ravenna to Civitavecchia (Rome), scheduled to conclude on July 20.
Crew Center extends deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the crew member during this incredibly difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic loss.
