A fight between cruise passengers at Nassau Cruise Port escalated into a violent confrontation with police officers, resulting in multiple arrests, injuries to four officers, and damage to a police station.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, officers responded to reports of a disturbance involving several cruise visitors in the port area shortly after 4:45 p.m. on Monday, June 8.
Three women and two men, all U.S. nationals, were arrested following the altercation.
Video footage recorded at the cruise port and shared on social media shows a chaotic scene as passengers exchanged punches and shoved one another while port staff attempted to break up the fight. Based on observations from the video, the incident appears to have involved a younger group of passengers and an elderly couple, although police have not confirmed what sparked the confrontation.
The situation continued to deteriorate after the five passengers were transported to the Tourism Police Station for processing.
Police said officers were preparing to search the suspects when the group allegedly began "violently struggling" with law enforcement personnel.
According to authorities, one female suspect threw a chair through a glass door, shattering it. Police said a male suspect then kicked out the remaining glass in what appeared to be an attempt to escape custody. Officers quickly restrained the individual while additional police units were called to the station to help restore order.
The five passengers could now face a series of charges, including assaulting police officers, resisting arrest, fighting in a public place, malicious damage, and disorderly behavior.
The confrontation left four police officers injured. Authorities said two officers suffered blows to their bodies, one officer sustained a cut to the mouth, and another suffered a serious shoulder injury that required transportation to a local hospital by ambulance. Police have not provided an update on the officer's condition.
The passengers involved in the incident also suffered minor injuries during the initial fight at the cruise port and received treatment from Emergency Medical Services personnel.
Facebook user Joshua H. Mott, who recorded part of the altercation, siad that the passengers were sailing aboard one of the Royal Caribbean ships visiting Nassau that day.
Cruise schedules show that six ships were in Nassau on June 8, including Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, Princess Cruises' Caribbean Princess, and Disney Cruise Line's Disney Fantasy.
