Greek Authorities Order 500-Metre Security Zone for Crown Iris

Greek authorities ordered a 500-metre maritime security zone around the cruise ship Crown Iris for its scheduled visit to Argostoli, Kefalonia, on October 14, alongside temporary road restrictions near the cruise terminal.

Kefalonia Focus published the port authority’s decisions on October 13. The maritime restrictions apply from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., prohibiting motorized and non-motorized vessels from approaching within 500 metres of the cruise ship’s berth. Ferries operating the scheduled Argostoli–Lixouri service are exempt.

Authorities also restricted vehicle access along part of the port’s waterfront from 11 p.m. on October 13 until 8 p.m. on October 14.

The orders cite the need to maintain safety, security and public order during the ship’s visit. They do not identify a specific threat, announce an expected protest or confirm any incident involving passengers or crew.

Crown Iris, operated by Israel’s Mano Maritime, has repeatedly drawn pro-Palestinian demonstrations during calls at Greek ports. Protests continued this year, including a gathering in Piraeus on August 14, when police prevented demonstrators from approaching the ship.

Earlier developments include the July 22, 2025 protest in Syros, after which Crown Iris left early without its passengers going ashore. Demonstrations followed in Rhodes and Crete, with police intervention and detentions. Separately, espionage investigations in June 2025 led to arrests in Crete and Cyprus. Crew Center’s previous coverage described investigators examining photographs of cruise ships among images recovered in the Crete case.

In June 2026, Greek police arrested a man in Crete suspected of preparing an attack against Israeli interests. Media reports identified Crown Iris as a possible target, although the initial police statement did not name the intended target. None of these earlier investigations has been publicly linked to the October 14 restrictions in Argostoli.
