Martel Fursdon, Staff Captain with Carnival UK, has been awarded the Merchant Navy Medal for Meritorious Service, one of the UK maritime sector’s most prestigious honors.
Fursdon, who has served aboard both P&O Cruises and Cunard ships during more than four years with Carnival UK, was recognized for her contribution to maritime safety, mentorship, inclusion and the development of future seafarers.
Before joining Carnival UK, Fursdon made history as the first female captain in The Lundy Company’s history. During her career, she has mentored cadets and officers, supported safety improvements across multiple vessels and helped with the repatriation of stranded seafarers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She has also been active in supporting women pursuing careers at sea through the Women’s Officer Network and by mentoring female officers moving into leadership positions.
“I’m incredibly touched, honoured, and still somewhat in disbelief to be awarded the Merchant Navy Medal,” Fursdon said.
She added that receiving the recognition as a woman working in a traditionally male-dominated industry made the honor particularly meaningful, and expressed hope that her achievement would encourage more young women to pursue maritime careers.
