A Carnival Cruise Line restaurant manager has been hailed as a hero after saving the life of an 11-month-old Infant who stopped breathing during a family cruise. His quick actions in the middle of a terrifying emergency earned him the company's highest recognition, the prestigious "Hero" award, while reminding everyone that behind every cruise vacation are crew members ready to respond when lives are on the line.

Milić Šarović, a restaurant manager from Montenegro, was formally recognized by Carnival Cruise Line after his life-saving intervention aboard the Carnival Celebration prevented what could have become a heartbreaking tragedy.

The emergency happened while the ship was sailing toward Miami. After finishing his shift, Šarović had just sat down to eat dinner in one of the ship's restaurants when another crew member rushed in asking for help.

"I sat down to eat dinner when a worker came in all upset and said something terrible was happening," Šarović recalled in an interview with Bar Info. "I ran and saw a crowd surrounding a little girl who was showing no signs of life."

The 11-month-old child had choked on a grape and was unconscious. According to Šarović, she had already turned blue and people nearby were desperately trying to help, but her airway remained blocked.

Realizing every second mattered, he relied on his emergency response training and instinct. He carefully took the infant and began performing a modified infant choking rescue maneuver.

"I instinctively jumped in because no one was applying the correct maneuver," he said. "I took her even though I didn't know if she was alive. It was a huge responsibility, but my parental instinct was stronger."

For what felt like an eternity, he continued trying to clear the baby's airway while her parents stood beside him crying and pleading for him not to stop.

"Maybe it lasted only a minute, but to me it felt much longer," he said. "Then she vomited the grape she had swallowed and started breathing again. I just sat down afterward. I was completely overwhelmed."

Shipboard medical personnel arrived moments later and confirmed that the child recovered, crediting Šarović's immediate intervention with preventing a fatal outcome.

During a ceremony aboard the ship, Carnival Cruise Line honored him with its "Hero" distinction, reserved for employees who demonstrate extraordinary courage and professionalism in exceptional circumstances.

"There have been many recognitions in my career, both professionally and personally, but receiving the 'Hero' award after saving an 11-month-old girl from almost certain death on board is the greatest achievement of my career," Šarović said.

The recognition follows another major honor he received from Carnival last year when he was named the company's Best Leader, reflecting both his leadership and dedication to his crew.

Thanks to one crew member's calm thinking, training, and willingness to act without hesitation, a family's vacation ended not in tragedy, but in gratitude—and a little girl was given the chance to keep growing up.
