A woman has died after falling from a balcony aboard the Carnival Firenze while the ship was sailing off the coast of California.
The incident happened on April 27 near Catalina Island. Early reports say the woman fell from her cabin balcony onto a lower deck. Family members who were traveling with her quickly alerted the crew.
Crew members responded right away, but the woman could not be saved. Her identity has not been released, and it is still not clear what led to the fall.
Authorities have been notified, and an investigation is now expected. Reports say federal officials, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are working with local authorities to look into what happened.
In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said its Care Team is supporting the woman’s family and that the company is cooperating fully with investigators.
The ship, which sails from Long Beach, was on a regular cruise at the time. It continued its trip, with authorities expected to meet the ship in port to begin a full investigation.
