Virgin Voyages has shared a tribute following the passing of Joan Templeman, the beloved wife of Virgin Group founder Richard Branson. Joan, known as the quiet force behind one of the world’s most recognizable entrepreneurial empires, died at the age of 80.
Richard Branson announced the news through a deeply emotional message posted on social media and on Virgin’s official website. He described himself as “heartbroken,” remembering Joan as his “most wonderful companion, friend, mother, and grandmother we could ever have wished for.” Branson reflected on their five-decade relationship, recalling the moment he fell “in love at first sight” while she was working in an antiques shop, and admiring the “down-to-earth Scottish woman who would never be impressed by my usual antics.”
While Branson’s achievements span aviation, space travel, and satellite ventures, he credited his wife as the anchor of his life.
Following Branson’s announcement, Virgin Voyages released its own tribute, highlighting Joan’s deep and meaningful connection to the cruise line and its crew:
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Joan, the beloved wife of Richard Branson, a devoted partner, mother, grandmum, and radiant source of light.
Across the Virgin family, her kindness, grace, and generous spirit left an indelible mark.”
The company shared that Joan had visited Virgin Voyages ships, where she warmly engaged with crew members and treated them “like family.” According to the cruise line, Joan embodied the heart of the Virgin brand joyful, humble, and deeply compassionate. Her presence aboard their ships left an unforgettable impression on the crew, who described her as gracious, uplifting, and genuinely interested in the people working behind the scenes.
“Her care for our crew and the way she uplifted those behind the scenes perfectly mirrored the adventurous, compassionate, and human spirit we strive to champion at Virgin Voyages,” the statement read.
Virgin Voyages extended its condolences to Richard, their children Sam and Holly, and the entire Branson family, especially Joan’s adored grandchildren.
