Norwegian Breakaway Crew Member Identified After Overboard Tragedy

The crew member who went overboard from the cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway has been identified as Deepak Singh Rathore from Beri–Bhajangarh in Sikar, Rajasthan, announced the Seafarers Association of Rajasthan. In a statement, the Seafarers Association of Rajasthan extended sympathies to his family, honoring his memory and service at sea.

The tragic event took place late Saturday night, April 25, as the Boston-based vessel was sailing back from Bermuda. Passengers onboard described a sudden shift in atmosphere after the captain announced a “Code Oscar” on the port side, the maritime signal for a person overboard.

According to reports, the emergency was triggered roughly 12 miles east of Wellfleet, Massachusetts, shortly before midnight. The ship turned around and began a search and rescue operation. Security footage later confirmed that the crew member, who was working in the galley department, went overboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and assisted in the search efforts. Despite the extensive response, the crew member could not be located, and the search was suspended.

At the same time, messages circulating across crew pages and social media have highlighted the emotional strain many seafarers face while working onboard. One widely shared post from a fellow crew member reflected on the pressures of life at sea, including long working hours, distance from family, and personal challenges.

The post urged families and loved ones to remain supportive, noting that regular communication can serve as an important source of relief for crew members dealing with stress and homesickness. It also described Rathore as a kind and respected colleague, remembered fondly by those who had heard about him through mutual connections.
