Guests aboard Royal Caribbean’s brand-new Star of the Seas got an unexpected scare when the ship’s emergency “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” alert rang out at the cruise line’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.
The alarm was triggered on August 14 after 8 a.m., when a man accidentally fell from the pier between Star of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas. Witnesses say he was holding up his phone to film the new ship when he lost his balance and toppled into the water.
Photos shared online show the man clinging to a life ring thrown in by crew members. Within minutes, a rescue team on a jet ski pulled him out and returned him safely to shore. While his exact condition isn’t known, no serious injuries were reported.
Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident in a statement to Cruise Hive:
“A guest fell off the dock while capturing footage of the ship on his smart phone. Our team immediately picked him up via jet ski and returned him to shore.”
Star of the Seas, the second vessel in Royal Caribbean’s cutting-edge Icon class, was on a special preview cruise from Port Canaveral, Florida. Sharing the port that day was Symphony of the Seas, sailing a 7-night Bahamas trip from Cape Liberty, New Jersey.
