MSC World Europa Suffers Engine Failure, Safely Headed to Naples

A morning scare for passengers and crew aboard MSC World Europa ended on a calmer note after the ship suffered an engine failure near the island of Ponza, Italy. The vessel, carrying 8,585 people, is now en route to Naples after technicians managed to partially restore propulsion.

According to MSC Cruises, all onboard services including power, dining, and entertainment, remained fully operational throughout the incident. The company said there was never any risk to guests or crew, and the Coast Guard closely monitored the situation with patrol boats and a helicopter on standby.

The 2022-built flagship was sailing from Genoa to Naples when it reported electrical problems with its engines at 7:25 a.m. Tugboats were dispatched to assist, while MSC engineers carried out onboard checks to stabilize the system. Passengers in Naples awaiting embarkation have been informed of delays, with disembarkation now scheduled for 9:00 p.m.

Once in Naples, the cruise ship will undergo a full technical inspection before its next scheduled departure for Messina tomorrow morning, pending final clearance.
