MSC Cruises Successfully Test Biofuel on MSC Opera

MSC Cruises and Eni have successfully completed a biofuel trial aboard the MSC Opera, marking another step toward reducing emissions in the cruise industry.

During the test, one of the ship’s engines operated for around 2,000 hours using 100% HVO biofuel, also known as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, without requiring any engine modifications.

According to the companies, the trial reduced greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional marine fuel. The test also showed a 16% reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and lower particulate emissions.

The project was supported by engine manufacturer Wärtsilä and independently validated by Bureau Veritas.

MSC Cruises said biofuels such as HVO could help accelerate the cruise industry’s transition toward cleaner energy while supporting its long-term goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The biofuel used in the trial was produced from waste-based materials including used cooking oil, animal fats, and agricultural residues.
