A routine lifeboat test aboard the Carnival Dream turned into a wild scene in Cozumel on Monday when a lifeboat suddenly snapped loose and crashed into the water.
The incident happened shortly after noon while the cruise ship was docked in Mexico. Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that no one was injured, as the lifeboat was being lowered unmanned for a scheduled inspection.
Photos posted on social media by passengers show the bright-orange boat dangling crookedly from one cable before plunging into the water. Chunks of the mangled craft remained attached to the ship, while the bulk of it drifted over to the pier. Cruise passengers shared photos of the busted lifeboat floating alongside the ship.
Carnival explained what went wrong, saying:
“A latch got caught on one of the cables, resulting in the vessel hanging from one end, then falling into the water below. No one was injured.”
The Carnival Dream is currently sailing a six-night itinerary from Galveston with stops in Costa Maya, Belize City, and Cozumel. The stricken lifeboat incident occurred during the final port call before the ship’s scheduled return to Texas on Friday.
