Viking Ocean Cruises celebrated the christening of its newest ocean-going vessel, the Viking Vesta, in Split, Croatia. The ceremony comes as the cruise line marks its 10th anniversary in the cruise business, reinforcing its reputation for delivering elegant, small-ship experiences.
The 998-guest ship, delivered by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, was welcomed into the award-winning fleet in traditional Scandinavian style. Norwegian journalist Lene Tangevald-Jensen served as godmother, honoring maritime tradition by cutting a ribbon with a Viking broadsaxe, sending a bottle of Norwegian aquavit smashing against the hull.
The festive event included musical performances by Sissel Kyrkjebø, a renowned crossover soprano and godmother of Viking Jupiter, and celebrated Norwegian violinist Tor Jaran Apold.
“As we celebrate our tenth anniversary in the cruise business in 2025, we are delighted to welcome the new Viking Vesta to our award-winning fleet of elegant sister ships,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman and CEO of Viking. “We are very grateful for Lene as her godmother. She embodies the values that matter most to Viking—kindness, honesty, hard work, and a natural curiosity. I am proud to count her among my friends and as a valued member of the extended Viking family.”
Tangevald-Jensen is widely respected for her three-decade journalism career, writing for two of Norway’s leading financial publications and conducting more than 500 interviews, including one with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. She also supports educational and humanitarian efforts through the LEON Trust and Make-A-Wish Foundation Norway.
Following the christening, Viking Vesta is beginning her inaugural season sailing the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Her maiden voyage is scheduled to depart from Fusina, near Venice, en route to Barcelona on July 2, 2025.
Like all Viking ocean ships, the 54,300-gross-ton Viking Vesta maintains the brand’s signature small-ship feel, with 499 veranda staterooms, Scandinavian-inspired interiors, light-filled public areas, and spacious outdoor decks — offering guests a serene and refined cruising experience.
