Inside the Medical Center on Mein Schiff Cruise Ships

Medical facilities on cruise ships play a vital role in safeguarding the health and well-being of thousands of guests and crew at sea. With people often far from land-based healthcare, onboard medical teams must be prepared for a wide range of situations—from minor illnesses to life-threatening emergencies. On Mein Schiff 5, operated by TUI Cruises, this responsibility is met with state-of-the-art care and a highly trained medical staff.

In a recent post, ship doctor Dr. Grassmann shared a behind-the-scenes look at the ship’s onboard hospital and the essential work carried out by the medical team. "As a ship doctor, I am responsible together with my team—two doctors and three nurses—for the medical care of up to 2,500 guests and around 950 crew members," he explained.

The medical center aboard Mein Schiff 5 is equipped with technology that goes far beyond basic first aid. It includes a small intensive care unit, diagnostic ultrasound, and the capability to perform minor surgical procedures. Advanced services such as X-ray imaging, comprehensive laboratory diagnostics, and telemedicine support are also available, ensuring swift and effective responses to a variety of medical situations.

Dr. Grassmann describes the work as both diverse and demanding, but deeply fulfilling. “Working in medicine on a cruise ship is challenging and varied—but also an exciting task that I greatly appreciate,” he said. He also expressed pride in his team and their ability to deliver high-quality care in the unique setting of life at sea: “I am very happy to be part of this special team and live medicine where others vacation—in the middle of the sea.”
