On the morning of September 5, while docking at the port of Piraeus, Greece, the cruise ship MV Gemini, operated by Miray Cruises, struck the pier. Initial assessments indicate damage to the ship’s hull above the waterline. According to a crew member who wished to remain anonymous, the vessel made contact with the pier during its maneuver, leaving a large hole in the hull.
“MV Gemini, while docking in Piraeus, accidentally hit the dock, causing a big hole in its hull. Apparently, the problems are getting worse for this old lady,” our source told us.
Port authorities and the ship’s technical teams are expected to assess the damage and determine the necessary repairs before the vessel can resume operations.
This accident adds to a growing list of problems for the aging vessel, which was built in 1992. Earlier this year, in March, MV Gemini suffered an engine room fire shortly after departing from Piraeus. Smoke was visible from the upper decks, and both crew and passengers were directed to muster stations as a precaution. While the fire was extinguished, the ship was forced to return slowly to port due to engine complications.
Following this latest incident, it is likely that Greek port authorities and classification society inspectors will demand a thorough inspection before the vessel can sail again.
