A cruise passenger who disembarked in Bermuda and asked customs officers whether cannabis was illegal was fined $2,500 after officials discovered she was carrying cannabis and cocaine.
Pamela Walker, a 60-year-old passenger aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas, arrived at King’s Wharf last Saturday. Royal Gazette reported that upon disembarking, she reportedly approached customs officers and asked whether marijuana was legal on the island. When informed that it was not, she responded:
“Well, I don’t want to get in no trouble. If I had some weed, would you take it or should I just go back and leave it on the ship?”
That led to a search, during which authorities discovered several plastic bags containing a green, plantlike substance, a piece of foil containing white powder, and two grinders. A further search of Walker’s cabin turned up additional cannabis in a suitcase.
According to prosecutors, the white powder was confirmed to be cocaine weighing 0.31 grams, with an estimated street value of $100. The cannabis totaled 10.6 grams and was valued at approximately $1,000.
Walker appeared in court and pleaded guilty to importing both controlled substances and possessing drug-related equipment. Her defense attorney told the court that Walker had been using cannabis to manage pain from a previous injury and said that the substances were for personal use.
“She was cooperative, admitted to the offense immediately, and expressed genuine remorse,” her attorney said.
During the sentencing, Senior Magistrate Maxanne Anderson criticized Walker for failing to educate herself on the local laws. “You didn’t do your research — you must always do your research,” Anderson said. “Some countries kill for these types of offenses.”
