A 31-year-old crew member was injured aboard a Bahamas-flagged cruise ship while in Santorini on Sunday, June 15, according to local media reports. The seafarer, working in the engine department sustained a leg injury while descending a stairway to the engine room.
The incident occurred in the afternoon hours and was reported to the Thira Port Authority by the ship's local shipping agent. The crew member reportedly stumbled and fell on the stairs, resulting in an injury to his left leg. Emergency protocols were quickly activated. He was transported by a passenger-tourist vessel, Lanza, to the port of Athinios, where an EKAB ambulance was waiting to transfer him to a private clinic for initial treatment. He was later moved to a medical facility in Athens for further examination.
While authorities have not officially disclosed the identity or nationality of the injured seafarer, or the name of the vessel involved, ship tracking data indicates that only two cruise ships were docked in Santorini on June 15: Norwegian Epic and Celestyal Discovery. Of these, only Norwegian Epic sails under the Bahamas flag, and is currently on a 10-day Eastern Mediterranean itinerary.
A preliminary investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Thira Port Authority. Details surrounding the cause of the fall and any contributing factors remain unclear.
We extend our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured crew member.
