The cruise ship Costa Serena, operated by Costa Cruises, will be used as a floating hotel during the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan. The ship will be docked at Kinjo Pier in Nagoya Port and will provide accommodation for athletes and officials during the event.
Hotel Ship for Athletes
According to the Aichi-Nagoya Organising Committee (AINAGOC), a contract has been signed with JTB’s Nagoya Business Division to charter the ship. The Costa Serena will be docked in Nagoya from September 15 to October 6, 2026, while the Asian Games will take place from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
The 114,000-ton ship, registered in Italy, is 290 meters long and has around 1,500 guest rooms. Onboard facilities include restaurants, lounges, a fitness center, and pools — providing everything athletes and staff need during their stay.
A Practical Accommodation Solution
The decision to use a cruise ship instead of building a new athletes’ village was made to save time and reduce costs. The Costa Serena will act as a “floating village,” offering accommodation close to several sports venues located near Nagoya Port.
JTB Nagoya was chosen as the charter operator because it is the official agent for Costa Cruises in Japan. The company will handle coordination and communication with the shipping line to ensure the project runs smoothly.
Comfort and Convenience for Athletes
Around 4,000 athletes and staff are expected to stay on board the Costa Serena. An additional 2,400 guests will be accommodated in nearby temporary housing, with shuttle buses providing transport between the facilities and competition venues.
The ship will provide meals, recreation areas, and medical and support services similar to those available at a land-based village.
