Construction Begins on Oceania Sonata

Oceania Cruises marked a major milestone in its next phase of growth on Tuesday with the keel-laying ceremony for its newest ship, Oceania Sonata, held in Venice.

The ceremony represents the formal start of construction and is traditionally seen as the moment when a new ship transitions from concept to reality. For Oceania Cruises, the occasion carries added significance, as Oceania Sonata is positioned to usher in what the company describes as a new chapter in luxury cruising.

Speaking during the event, Jason Montague, Chief Luxury Officer of Oceania Cruises, emphasized the broader importance of the vessel to the brand’s future.

“Oceania Sonata will be the beginning of a new chapter not only for Oceania Cruises, but also for luxury travel,” Montague said.

According to the line, the new ship will focus on elevated design, refined accommodations, and immersive itineraries—hallmarks that have become central to Oceania’s positioning in the upper-premium and luxury cruise segment.

Oceania Sonata is scheduled to be delivered in 2027, with bookings opening January 28. Once in service, the ship is expected to sail a variety of destination-rich itineraries, continuing the line’s emphasis on longer port stays, culturally focused experiences, and culinary-led travel.

While full technical specifications have yet to be released, the ship is expected to feature:

  • All-suite accommodations, designed to raise the bar for space and comfort

  • Expanded culinary venues, building on Oceania’s reputation for fine dining at sea

  • Thoughtfully curated itineraries, combining marquee destinations with lesser-visited ports
