La Coruna is preparing for one of its busiest cruise days in recent memory as five cruise ships are scheduled to arrive on August 12, 2026, the day a total solar eclipse will cross northern Spain. The combination of the astronomical event and thousands of cruise visitors is expected to create an extraordinary atmosphere across the Galician port city.

More than 11,300 cruise passengers are expected to witness  the first total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain in more than a century. Many cruise passengers will have the unique opportunity to experience the event either from the city or from the decks of their ships as they sail away from the port.

According to the scheduled calls, the Celebrity Apex and Queen Anne will be the largest vessels in port, carrying approximately 3,200 and 3,000 passengers respectively. They will be joined by Celebrity Equinox, Borealis, and Explora III, with each ship assigned to different berths throughout the harbor. To accommodate the busy day, the Borealis will use the Centenario Sur berth, an area not typically used for cruise operations.

The cruise traffic will not be limited to eclipse day alone. Three additional cruise ships are expected on August 11, bringing more than 9,000 passengers, while another vessel carrying nearly 4,400 guests is scheduled to arrive on August 13. Together, the four-day period is expected to deliver one of the busiest stretches of the 2026 cruise season for La Coruna.

For many visitors, the highlight will be witnessing totality from one of Europe's premier viewing locations. Others may experience the eclipse from the open sea as their ships continue toward ports such as Bilbao and Gijón, offering a memorable perspective on one of the decade's most anticipated celestial events.
