Shortly before 6 a.m., the ship's captain announced a "man overboard," initiating search operation. The Regal Princess altered course and circled the area as crew members searched for the missing person. Carnival Jubilee, which was sailing nearby, joined the search alongside Mexican rescue authorities. After more than eight hours of searching, the ship resumed its voyage toward its next scheduled port in Belize.

Princess Cruises has not released the identity of the crew member or disclosed which department the person worked in. However, several crew said the person was a member of the ship's casino staff.

According to Jimenez, the captain continued providing regular updates throughout the morning while counselors remained available to support both passengers and crew as the gravity of the situation became clear.

In a statement, Princess Cruises said it was "deeply saddened by the passing of a crew member aboard Regal Princess following an overboard incident" and extended its condolences to the crew member's family, friends and colleagues.

While the cruise line confirmed the crew member's death, it did not say whether the individual had been recovered from the water. The statement announced the crew member's passing without indicating whether the conclusion was based on a recovery or whether the individual had been presumed dead following the lengthy search.
