A 56-year-old Peruvian woman was medically evacuated from the cruise ship MSC Orchestra on Wednesday morning after suffering a stroke while the vessel was en route to Valencia.
The medical alert was raised at approximately 6:30 a.m. as the ship was sailing through the waters of the Gulf of Asinara, about 50 nautical miles from the port of Porto Torres, Italy. Following the report, the local Port Authority, working in coordination with the national Operations Center in Rome and the ship’s crew, immediately initiated an emergency response.
After consulting with the ship’s doctor, the International Radio-Medical Center (CIRM) determined that the passenger required urgent hospital treatment and ordered an immediate medical evacuation. To facilitate the transfer, the Porto Torres Coast Guard instructed MSC Orchestra to alter course toward the central area of the Gulf of Asinara, where sea conditions were more favorable.
A search-and-rescue patrol vessel was dispatched and intercepted the cruise ship at around 9:50 a.m., approximately five nautical miles off the coast of Porto Torres. The passenger was transferred safely to the rescue boat and transported to shore.
The operation concluded at approximately 10:25 a.m., when the woman was disembarked at the Porto Torres Port Authority pier and handed over to Italy’s 118 emergency medical service. She was subsequently transported to a hospital in Sassari for further treatment.
Following the evacuation, MSC Orchestra was cleared to resume its scheduled voyage to the port of Valencia.
