Celebrity Flora to Join Celebrity Cruises in 2019

Nov 17, 2017

Celebrity Cruises is building a new cruise ship for the Galapagos Islands which is set to debut in 2019. The new vessel named Celebrity Flora will have a capacity of 100 passengers and a tonnage of 5,739 gt, will be the largest cruise ship in the Galapagos Islands and will receive luxurious equipment in style of a large yacht. The ship is being built in the Dutch shipyard De Hoop, which is actually better known for river cruise ships construction.

“Celebrity Flora marks another example of our revolutionary ship design by allowing the destination and its environment to influence every decision we’ve made. From the luxurious all-suite accommodations to industry-first, eco-friendly innovations, we created a ship that brings a new level of luxury, sustainability and natural exploration to the region. Guests will feel as though they’re boarding a high-end yacht for a week of unparalleled adventures, and they are!” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO, Celebrity Cruises.

According to Celebrity Cruises, an important focus in the construction of the new cruise ship is on environmental friendliness: Optimized engines and an improved hull shape are said to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions by 15 percent compared to the Celebrity Xpedition built in 2001.

Water filter systems in the suites are designed to reduce the use of plastic bottles. The ship should be able to keep its position accurate even without an anchor so that the sensitive seabed of the region is spared. Zero-speed stabilizers provide more comfort for the passengers. Celebrity Flora will have three Zodiac inflatable boats at the same time, resulting in less waiting time for shore excursions and reconnaissance trips.

The design of the vessel should orient itself strongly outward, in order to grant the passengers from everywhere the best possible view of the Galapagos Islands. The ship will also be equipped with an open-air platform for observing the starry sky.
