Celebrity Cruises has officially christened its newest ship, Celebrity Xcel, in a vibrant ceremony in Fort Lauderdale, led by world-renowned chef Janaina Torres. Named Best Female Chef in the World 2024 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, Torres blessed the ship before triggering the traditional Champagne bottle break across the hull, marking Xcel’s official entry into the fleet.
Celebrity selected Chef Torres as godmother in recognition of her global culinary influence and her role as a pioneering force in Brazil’s gastronomy scene. Her work at A Casa do Porco in São Paulo has earned international acclaim for elevating Brazilian cuisine, advocating for women in hospitality, and improving food access and school nutrition programs.
“Chef Torres’s philosophy mirrors our own mission of creating experiences rooted in culture and community,” said Jason Liberty, President & CEO of Royal Caribbean Group. “Her journey and passion make her the perfect godmother for Celebrity Xcel.”
The christening unfolded at sunset on the ship’s expansive pool deck, hosted by Celebrity Xcel’s cruise directors. Performers opened the evening with a high-energy show, followed by a stirring performance from the St. Andrews Pipe Band of Miami.
A local rabbi and bishop offered blessings before Celebrity Cruises President Laura Hodges Bethge took the stage. She praised the team behind the ship and reflected on Celebrity’s evolution. “To this beautiful vessel, Celebrity Xcel may your guests be forever inspired by your beauty, your warmth, and the wonder that continues the spirit of our Greek heritage, taking our brand to a new level.”
The ceremony also showcased several new venues that distinguish Xcel from her sister ships. Among them:
-
Bora – A new Mediterranean-style restaurant replacing the Rooftop Garden Grill. With a focus on fresh seafood, the venue includes a fish-on-ice display and menu inspired by coastal cuisine.
-
The Bazaar – A redesigned aft space replacing Eden, home to two new dining concepts:
-
Mosaic, a fine-dining venue emphasizing artistic presentations.
-
Spice, offering regional cuisine reflecting the ship’s worldwide itineraries.
