Search called off for crew member who went overboard near Cyprus

On Thursday afternoon, the Coast Guard suspended its search for a missing crew member who went overboard a cruise ship off the coast of Cyprus. Larnaca-based search and rescue coordination centre said that the search operations to locate the crew member reported missing since Tuesday, has been called off without locating the missing person.

“We would like to inform you that despite the extensive search conducted in an area of 500 square nautical miles, unfortunately, it was not possible the detect the missing person. Therefore the Search - Rescue operation is suspended until any new information on the incident emerges. During the operations, helicopters of the 460 E-D Squadron of the GEF Air Force Command and Police Air Squadron, with a specialized medical team from the Ambulance Service Aircraft Group have been depolyed.” said Larnaca search and rescue coordination centre.

On April 21, 2021 Larnaca KSED received information from the Limassol Port Control Center about the missing cruise ship crew member. The Captain of the ship informed port authorities, that the missing person was last seen on April 20th evening while the ship was 20 nautical miles south of Cyprus. The search and rescue center immediately activated the national search and rescue plan, sending aircrafts of the national guard and police to the area to carry out search operations to locate the missing person.
