Costa Crew Member found dead in his cabin

Feb 16, 2017

We are deeply saddened to share with you the death of Costa Magica crew member. The 27-year-old male dishwasher from India which is yet to be named was found dead in his cabin. According to Antigua Observer, the crew member was found by his roommate just before 2 pm. The ship officers reported the death to St Johns Police department while the vessel was in Antigua on February, 15. Police say that the deceased was found hanging in his cabin and that his fellow cabin mate took him down in an attempt to revive him, to no avail. Ship’s doctor came to help, but couldn't do anything for the crew member who was pronounced dead at the scene. The police are investigating the case surrounding his death. The crew member name was not revealed in respect to his family, which was notified by Costa Cruises Care Team.

Rumors on the ship circulate that the crew member had problems with his wife and that he made a video for her. “Sad, Yesterday nobody wanted to work here,” says one crew member.

In the wake of this event, we send our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased crew member. It is always disturbing to hear of a death of our fellow coworker. Dishwashers on cruise ships work extremely hard and yet their salary is very low. Rest in Peace Paisa.

While rare, there have been tragic events by hanging in the past. In March 2016, a 21-year-old cook Eduardo Sanchez Smith, working on Island Princess was found hanging in his cabin. It was Eduardo’s first contract on a cruise ship. In July 2015, 33-year-old British crew member also working as a cook on Crystal Serenity was found hanging in the cabin while the ship was in Bordeaux, France. It was also his first contract.
